Operator Excellence Manager (OXM)
Operator Excellence Manager consist of a series of Process Studio Simulators combined with e-learning designed to be a DCS (Distributed Control System) operator introduction course. This training courses make use of generic process plants and control systems modeled in Process Studio for Windows (PSW). All DCS systems make use of the same basic building blocks, control loops and parameters. The main ones will be explained throughout the courses. Also, the trainees will be introduced to the basics of operating a chemical plant. 






OXM is Process Studio based and uses a learning management system (LMS) software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of e-learning education courses and material for the training of operators and students. 

OXM is SCORM conformant and can be used with any LMS that is suitable for this.Protomation can provide generic LMS or can use an LMS already in use by the client (provided is SCORM conformant).

Protomation’s Operating Excellence Manager enhance in this way the training of plant operators and students by linking three important aspects:




  • An LMS system (or LMR) which delivers online courses or training to learners, while managing students and keeping track of their progress and performance. The LMS system is where the lessons are started, and where a final result (if available) will be recorded.
  • The Process Studio OTS applications especially designed for the purpose of efficient and comprehensive learning. The PSW application will be the “core” environment where the lesson will take place with a guide through the exercise. The PSW application script will also be used to score the Trainee.
  • The E-Learning environment (HTML), containing the theory and exercises, and guiding the trainee through the whole lesson






The applications are designed to give a good theoretical grasp of the dynamic behavior of each one of the processes. Trainees also have a chance to get hands-on experience in the operation of the processes with state-of-the-art control technology. The applications are an excellent tool for training process operators to handle modern control systems.

OXM applications can be used to practice process start-up, optimum control with control strategies of various complexities and to train the operator on how to deal operation of the process under normal conditions. In addition, the trainee is trained on how to deal with upsets and emergency situations.




The courses explain how the DCS functionality works within PSW. Some of the functionality shown is specific for PSW and will work (slightly) different in specific DCS systems of various vendors, or might even vary from system to system due to operating companies specifications. Both the trainee and the instructor should be aware of this. However, the main principles of all DCS systems are similar, so once someone understands how these work, working with another DCS system should require only a minor amount of training.




OXM is written for both the Trainee and the Instructor and contains general data for both. The course includes:




  • Theoretical information of the processes in general
  • Design Data on which the Simulator is based
  • Detailed Process Description 
  • Logic, Interlock Description 
  • Implemented Instrumentation
  • Script Explanation
  • Process Control

Petrochem: Is an introduction to Process Studio® but also, while explaining the principles of distillation, it teaches how to operate and control a typical process. Is meant to be a package but its applications can be individually selected.
Protomation also provides services to train operators on a specific plant.  The generic courses can be expanded with specific lessons by making similar lessons based upon an emulated simulator made specifically for the client’s plant
